OUR STORY
Welcome to Gillian's Irish Pub - Where the Heart of Ireland Meets the Charm of Dunn, North Carolina!
Here at Gillian's Irish Pub, we are delighted to bring a piece of Ireland to you, right here in the hometown of Jason and Chad, Dunn. Gillian and Jason Johnson, along with Jason's lifelong friend, proudly own Gillian's Irish Pub—a dream they've cherished for years. Their vision is to introduce an authentic Irish pub experience to the community of Dunn.
For Gillian, childhood in a traditional Irish family meant that social interactions frequently centered on the welcoming atmosphere and companionship found in Irish pubs. Jason gained a profound appreciation for this dynamic when he relocated to Ireland with Gillian and their family of three. After five years, they returned to the States, now a family of six, carrying with them a deep understanding that the essence of life unfolds within the embrace of an Irish pub.
People fall in love, share stories, and create memories to last a lifetime. It's where happy moments are celebrated with a pint of stout, and sad moments are commiserated over a glass of whiskey.
The heartbeat of a Dublin pub is its diverse happenings—from raucous laughter to poignant moments; even at a funeral, the Irish sense of humor always shines through.
It's this spirit of Ireland—the warmth, the fun, and the camaraderie—that Gillian's Irish Pub aims to bring to Dunn. Our mission is to create a space where the lively atmosphere of a Dublin pub meets the heartwarming charm of North Carolina. We invite you to share in the joys and sorrows of life, all while enjoying a pint of your favorite brew.
So, is Dunn ready for the magic of Gillian's Irish Pub? We hope so, and we can't wait to welcome you into our cozy and inviting establishment. Come experience the warmth of a Dublin pub right here in North Carolina.
Sláinte! (Cheers!)

ANNIE'S STORY
Step into Gillian's Irish Pub, where the legacy of Annie Winston's original Irish kitchen lives on. Annie, a formidable matriarch, masterfully navigated the culinary chaos of raising 14 children. In her bustling kitchen, giant pots of savory stew bubbled away, while big trays of warm apple pie emerged from the oven.
No. 7 Henrietta House housed the Winston family and was known as an Irish tenement, meaning dozens of other families also lived there. In those times, food wasn't just sustenance; it was a bond that transcended familial ties, uniting neighbors in a spirit of communal sharing. Gillian, Annie Winston's granddaughter, carries the torch of this rich heritage.
As you step into Gillian's, the aroma of Irish classics wafts through the air. Gillians pub menu pays homage to the hearty dishes of Annie's kitchen, we invite you to savor not just the flavors but the spirit of Irish hospitality, where every meal is a celebration and every guest is family.
Annie herself and members of The Winston Family took part in a documentary about Irish families growing up in the tenement houses.

ROYAL VALENTIA
FAMILY CONNECTION TO THE ROYAL VALENTIA HOTEL, CO. KERRY
Nestled on the picturesque Valentia Island in Co. Kerry, the Winston family's connection to this charming haven runs deep. Gillian's aunt and uncles are proud owners of the Royal Valentia Hotel, a beacon of hospitality for nearly two centuries. Gillian's sister has made the island her home, residing there with her young family. The late Marie Winston, nee Kidd, Gillian's mother, lived in a beautifully refurbished cottage by the sea, contributing to the family's connection. Although she moved to the island later in life, she became a part of the tight-knit community on Valentia.
EIGHT WONDER OF THE WORLD
The Royal Valentia Hotel, overlooking Valentia Harbour, stands as a testament to the island's legacy. Steeped in history, it witnessed the laying of the first successful transatlantic telegraph cable over 150 years ago, connecting Valentia Island to Heart's Content in Newfoundland, Canada. This historic event marked the birth of global communications, earning the hotel the prestigious title 'Royal' after a visit from Prince Arthur in 1869.
STARS WARS MOVIE
Adding to Valentia Island's allure are the nearby Skellig Islands (Irish: Na Scealaga), situated about 16 km west of Bolus Head on the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. Renowned for their thriving gannet and puffin populations, the Skelligs also house an early Christian monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Notably, these islands served as a backdrop for a scene in the Star Wars movie.
VALENTIA GOLD TIER INTERNATIONAL DARK SKIES RESERVE
Valentia Island not only boasts historical significance but also offers breathtaking night skies. Kerry, home to one of the clearest night skies globally, provides awe-inspiring views of the Milky Way. Southwest Kerry is celebrated as one of only three gold tier International Dark Sky Reserves, alongside The Grand Canyon and the African Savanna. The beauty of Valentia Island, both in its landscapes and celestial displays, makes it an unforgettable destination that has captivated the heart of many a visitor over the years.
