Gillian's Cocktail Menu

Where did the word cocktail originate from? You didn't ask but we will tell you anyway.

The origin of the term "cocktail" is unrelated to chickens but has connections to horses. In the 1800s, ginger and pepper were utilized as a form of suppository for horses, aiming to make them appear more lively and thereby increase buyer interest. This practice, known as "gingering" or "gingering the tail," involves applying an irritant to encourage a high tail carriage and lively movement.

Cocktails initially served medicinal purposes, gaining popularity for their mood-enhancing and mind-altering effects. Cocktails were a blend of various ingredients. Dr. Richard Stoughton, replaced the ginger and pepper with his blend of bitters and different spices, popularized in London as a hangover remedy. Cocktails have since evolved.

The earliest mention of a cocktail in the United States dates back to 1806 in 'The Balance and Columbian Repository,' describing it as a "stimulating liquor composed of spirits, sugar, water, and bitters."
Referred to as a "bittered sling," it was considered an excellent electioneering potion.
